This is part of a review by PJ after a very very recent Kev show in the UK..........what a class act:
After coming back on for an encore Kev looked up and said ‘It’s been a tough day for Barenaked Ladies. We should do Call and Answer for Steve’. Several Dippers lost it at this point as Kevin played the chorus and middle-eight. The expression on his face was obvious, this had hurt.
Afterwards, Kevin showed his appreciation for the fans by making sure we all got some time to chat with him. Of course, there was the elephant in the room. None of us had wanted to raise the issue, he must have enough to think about without fans bothering him. However, he seemed happy to discuss it, raising the subject himself. I think the key line to take away from this was ‘What we need to do now is make a kick-ass album.’ So, there’s no doubt. There will be another Barenaked Ladies album and they will be approaching it with the right attitude. They’re not done yet.

I'm not sure if I will ever be able to hear that song again without getting choked up. And I still can't believe we were front and center for it.

Sorry you are still having such a hard time with Flipper. It is really kind of wonderful to have been at that last 5 person BNL show.........sad in some regards, but wonderful that we were there for a bit of history.

Yeah, I am struggling with it. I'm a long term relationship kind of guy, and I'm having a hard time grappling with the idea that I will be drawn to BNL without Steve. The band has brought me tremendous joy over the years, and I've felt very connected to them. Nobody died, but it kind of feels that way. I don't think Steve is nearly as talented individually, he really feeds off the others in the band. So I know he's not going anywhere, but I'd much rather see him with BNL than by himself. I hope I'm surprised, I really do.

Flipper I agree with you there. It will be interesting to see what he does with musical theatre. I read something that quoted him that he was writing a musical. That intrigues me a great deal.
OK now here is a strange question...........but where do you see both Ed and Steve if Ed had not called him to fill in for the rest of his band that fateful day?

Tough one huh?
I guess I would see that Ed would have found someone else to go with him...........but really unsure what Steve would have done at all.

That's actually how I envisioned it, too. That Ed would have a rock band with at least a slightly different line-up than BNL's, that may or may not have hit it as big as BNL did. But I can pretty much only see Steve as a theatrical person. With maybe a popish album or two of critical acclaim, but not nearly as popular as BNL.

I wonder mostly how Steve would have turned out. He's admitted that he couldn't cope with the large scale success that BNL had. That's what caused his depression and alcoholism. He didn't know who he was supposed to be, didn't know if people liked him cause he was in a band or cause of who he was (boy, THAT question seems to be recurring), etc. So if he didn't have this particular success, would he now be more stable? You know, less time on the road, more of a family man? He has such a unique voice, he seems destined to be involved, but yeah I can see it would have been more from a different angle than main stream rock and roll. What is really cool about BNL is they are sooooo very different individually but there's something about them that synchs up in bizarre kind of way. Ed has always seemed more like the main stream musician to me, a great stage presence, and seems more "trained" as a musician.
