I had a friend growing up and we always called him Lionel. I have no idea why we called him that. His real name was Paul Richardson. His mum said to him about 20 something years ago that he should change his nickname because it would stick and he'd be forever known as Lionel. Who knew she'd be right?

Names are really funny. When I was pregnant it took 5 months to come up with my son's name that we could agree on. I would pick a name and my now ex would say...ohhh there was this idiot in junior high with that name, so no. And I was big on what nickname could be made from the name....I know how cruel kids are. So we went with Eric...and he has never had a nickname!!!

Awww! Nicknames are the best part. Half of my nicknames are mispronunciations (yes, I had to look up the spelling!) of my real name. And sometimes it's annoying (because some people aren't NICE about it), but when it's said by my close friends, who mean no harm at all (as opposed to those I'd like to let one..swing..in their direction...) it's really quite amusing and fun.
It's fun to have a name you can play around with, in other words.
Not that anyone ever really "grows up" (yeah, I'm stuck in a peter pan world), but I'm definitely in the...younger quartile of this group on the board...and to prove such, my old math teacher (who is not so old...he's...35, 36?) had the same problem... his wife is due in a couple months, and she's a teacher too, so they couldn't use any of their students' names as one for their child...
However they chose Mia over Brooke. I disagreed with them, but..who am I to judge?
Then again I have a prejudice against Mia.
Oy vey!!
I need to stop typing. And stop ( ).

My son never had a nickname, even though his name can be shortened - he didn't want to ...my daughter has shortened her name to Nessie, but if she does something wrong its going to be her full name...

Funny DH, I had 3 cousins who HAD to be Andrew, Daniel, and Philip - no shortening. I always thought it was too formal, but hey, it's their name.
Marketed, why no likie Mia? I'm curious! I like it because, yes, Mia Hamm. But I think Brooke is very nice too.
Now I don't really like it when someone I don't know calls me "Mare" right away - that's for people that are related to me or very good friends. Well, ok, if Steve, Ed, Kevin, Tyler, or Jim wanted to call me that, that's ok.......................I'll shut up!
and
(belated) CONGRATS, MAS!!!
