When we first went to france several years ago we'd use the ferry from portsmouth to Canne and then drive. One year we went to Brittany the next we drove 13 hours to the Pyrenees (I dont' reccomend it)
Been to the Alps (flew) twice, once in summer for the walking then the following winter to go snowboarding.
And last but not least my last trip was again to the pyrenees but as there are so many low cost airlines now it's cheaper and alot less hassle to fly and then hire a car at the other end.
