No, no you don't keep the oil for that long. I think it's good for a couple of months once it's been used. That was the maximum number of uses you get. And the oil is expensive so if you buy it you might as well cook that many turkeys.

And you're probably right about him forgetting the corn dogs, but he doesn't come to Kentucky very often so he will be surprised. I think it's fair to say he'll be the only one eating them!

wow, I am not sure which house I am going to show up at first. They all sound delish. I love traditions that if you don't do it, it is just not the same. We have had deep fried turkey camping and I was very skeptical and let me say, it was wicked. We have also had garbage can turkey camping which is also very good but harder to gauge the results. Hard to screw up a turkey though unless you feel the need to tack on a couple of hours just to make sure it is done....

Turkey in a trash can? I donno about that. I have never had fried turkey but smoked turkey is fabulous. We have a smoker but it would take days to do a turkey and it would take a LOT of mesquite wood.
We stopped my my MIL's on the way home last night. I was telling her how Kent wanted mashed potatoes in addition to every thing else and she told me it's because she always had all three. I already knew that, but I thought it was sweet that she knows her boy loves everything to be like momma made. Since her stroke you never know what she will remember.

surprising but often they will remember things from the distant pass, even though they can't identify what they ate for breakfast. Is she joining your for the holiday? My hubby's grandmother is coming, she is always so much fun to have around. None of my grandparents are around anymore, and Grandma Kate is a pistol. We always hear the same stories, but it is worth it to see her surrounded by kids, grandkids and great grandkids!!!

I am always happy and amazed that people our age (and even you young ones) have grandparents that are still alive. I hardly remember my grandparents. The last one passed away about 25 years ago and he was i his 80's at the time. That is really impressive and I hope you enjoy them.
Turkey in a garbage can is fun to do but hard to do because you really are not to open it up once you get it going. You stick a big dowel in the ground and put a big tinfoil scrunched up ball on the end of the dowel. You then set the turkey on the ball so it looks like the turkey is hangin on the dowel. Then you put the garbage can upside down over the turkey. So now think of it as like being in an oven. Now you put briquettes around the outside on the ground and on the top of the can. Light them and keep adding to them as needed. In a few hours you have a yummy turkey while you are camping. It isn't cooked as evenly as it is in the oven but it is still delish and lots of fun.
I would love to try flavors in the brine. We just use kosher salt and sugar.

Kent's sister always does a dinner at her house. We might stop by for pie, but we like to have left overs. I went over to Kent's mom's again today. She needed some curtains hung and no one had gotten around to it yet. (It's only been over a month since the old curtain rod broke and needed to be replaced. *eye roll*)
She is such a sweet woman. I really like her. Kent's family is really nice but they have children that don't have to mind I almost went nuts when I had them here before. No more family gatherings at our house. I love his mom though. She is a sweetheart.
In our brine we do the sugar and salt but we also do bourbon, rosemary, thyme, onion, garlic and apple juice. It's yummylicious.
The trashcan thing sounds fun. Kind of like a dutch oven for a turkey.

Good! Now you can get off your lazy bum, Jess!! Happy middle of this work week!! Woo! Yeah! I'm in a fairly good mood today... I signed some of the paperwork for my new car last night!! It is so cute. I can't pick it up until Friday or Saturday though, which is fine because it will give me time to say a loving good-bye to my PT Cruiser... Andrea's PT Taxi Service!! Good times... And as a side note, I look good today. ;D I may not be feeling very good about myself right now, but damnit, I can look good!

Nonick, good on ya! I love days where it all comes together. Have a great time out with your friend tonight. Did you tell us what kind of car you are getting?
Jessica, I hope work goes smoothly.
I am baking cornbread and saute'ing (sp?) celery and onions and stuff so I can be lazy on Thursday. I am making the stuffing (dressing) for Miranda too. Vincent is teething and on some days he can be a real snot monster. I want to preprep as much as possible so I am doing all kinds of things in advance.
Have a great day everyone!
